Stories From The Guam ShakeOut

At 10:17 am, October 17, 2013, the employees of the Micronesia-Guam Service Center participated in The Great Guam Shake Out. This year, we decided not to announce the drill to our employees to see what they would do. Right on cue, we played the sound file of the earthquake on a high level sound system which shook the building. Some of the employees immediately dropped to the ground, took cover and hung on. Those that were near their desks took cover under their desk and put on their safety helmet (which we supplied to all of our employees in preparation for last years drill). Another employee came out of his office to see what was going on and we pronounced him "dead". Immediately after the shaking stopped, the fire alarm went off to begin a fire drill. As employees were trying to exit the building, I told them that the exit they were trying to leave from was blocked from the earthquake and they had to find an alternate route. Once we had all assembled at the predetermined assembly area, we discussed some things that needed improvement during an evacuation. For example, not all employees had their helmets on and not one employee brought their emergency supply bag with them (which is stored under their desks as well). Overall, it was a great experience for our Service Center employees and hopefully will help them be better prepared in the future as we keep participating in these drills!
