Stories From The California ShakeOut

Larry Trotter
(PARC Secretary/ARES Emergency Co-ordinator - Amateur Radio Emergency Services)

On 16 October 2014 at 1016 hours, and Emergency Radio Net was opened on our local repeater at 145.470 Mhz. in Plumas County, CA. A brief synopsis was given, explaining the Event and requesting that Operators address their needs and the needs of their immediate family, subsequent to a simulated 6.9 magnitude earthquake. A roll call of registered Plumas Amateur Radio Club members was made, with requests for information to be verified by each responding operator as follows: Do you have the ability to operate as a base, mobile or remote Station? Can you deploy for up to 72 hours? Do you have backup power to supply your radio(s)? The responses were noted, along with the name and call sign of the Operator on a Roster.
This was a spontaneous Drill to acquire real-time data, to determine availability in the event of a real local disaster. The results indicated enough Operators were available to operate 6 12-hour shifts over 3 days, including Net Control Operations. Both RACES and ARES Operators responded during the Drill.
