This year to mark the Great ShakeOut, MySafe:LA will provide a 3:30 pm earthquake education session in the Park La Brea Community Activities Center & Theater, followed at 5:15 pm by a hi-rise rescue drill with the Los Angeles Fire Department at Park La Brea's Tower #49.

Eric Poppleton, award-winning photographer and Nepalese earthquake survivor, will be the special guest speaker at the education seminar.

All attendees will practice Drop, Cover and Hold On in the theater. They will also receive free "Emergency Go Bags" pre-loaded with survival gear and MySafe:LA's award-winning film, Older Adult Fire Safety. Those attending will also be treated to refreshments provided by Champagne Bakery.

At 5:15 pm, LAFD Task Force 61 will effect a hi-rise rescue of a trapped resident from an exterior fire escape at Tower #49.

This promises to be not only educational for residents and LAFD personnel, but a visual news story that will help Southern Californians prepare for earthquakes.

Full Description:
This year MySafe:LA will be providing an afternoon earthquake education session for residents of Park La Brea, followed by a hi-rise rescue drill with the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Park La Brea, in the La Brea neighborhood of Los Angeles, is home to more than 11,000 residents in a mix of townhouse and hi-rise apartments. The community is one of the largest in Los Angeles and offers a mix of young families to older adults.

On October 15, the day of the Great ShakeOut, MySafe:LA has invited Park La Brea residents and those living in the surrounding neighborhoods, to an earthquake education seminar at 3:30 pm in the Park La Brea Community Activities Center & Theater. The session will provide tips on earthquake-proofing your home, what to do during an earthquake, and how to prepare to survive after the "Big One" strikes Los Angeles.

Special Guest Speak, Eric Poppleton, the award-winning photographer, will tell his harrowing story of surviving the massive and deadly earthquake in Nepal last April.

During the presentation, attendees will be given the chance to Drop, Cover and Hold On in the theater, which will prompt a discussion about what to do when an earthquake strikes and you are not at home or at work.

All attendees will be given emergency "Go Bags" preloaded with items such as a whistle, flashlight, and earthquake safety brochures. Also included is MySafe:LA's award-winning film, Older Adult Fire Safety, which was filmed last year at Park La Brea. Champagne Bakery will provide food after the seminar.

At 5:15, MySafe:LA and the LAFD will conduct a hi-rise rescue drill just adjacent to the theater at Park La Brea's Tower #49. The Task Force from Fire Station 61 will respond and "throw the stick" to rescue a person trapped on an exterior fire escape on the hi-rise building. The drill will give residents the opportunity to understand how first responders effect a rescue in their community, and it will give LAFD personnel the rare chance to practice a hi-rise rescue operation.

This promises to be not only educational for residents and LAFD personnel, but a visual news story that will help Southern Californians prepare for earthquakes.
