Full Description:
As part of 10th anniversary of the tragic events on 11 September 2001, the US President Obama proclaimed on 31 August 2011 that this September is the National Preparedness Month. The objective of proclamation is to encourage all Americans to recognize the importance of preparedness and observe this month by working together to enhance the national security, resilience, and readiness. In response to his call, CIEDM has joined the National Preparedness Month Coalition, and as a member of the Coalition CIEDM undertakes the subject Meetup to accomplish the President's goal and the goals of other entities such as the United Nations (UN).

The Meetup is planned in the morning of Wednesday 12 October 2011, the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR). The UN's IDNDR is annually observed on the second Wednesday of October to promote a global culture of natural disaster risk reduction, and to encourage people and governments to participate in building more resilient communities and nations. This 2011 event is the 3rd annual event that CIEDM has undertaken. In addition to promote the culture, CIEDM will remind and ask the Meetup participants to take part in the following two major events, as we did in the past two years:

1. The Earth Science Week (ESW) 2011 to be held in 9-15 October 2011. With“Our Ever-Changing Earth”as the theme for 2011, American Geological Institute through ESW engages the public to learn about the natural processes that shape our planet over time. The geological disasters happened in recent years will be described to the participants.

2. The 2011 Great California ShakeOut! It will be held at 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, 20 October 2011. In 2010, more than 7.9 million Californians practiced how they will protect themselves during earthquakes, and increased their overall preparedness.

During the Meetup, CIEDM will provide tips of conduting inspections of properties and adding seismic improvements to properties. We'll lead a tour of Arcadia EcoHome, a sustainable green building, and perform a property inspection as a training exercise for the participants.
