As one of the cornerstone initiatives of the Earthquake Country Alliance, the Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill has inspired a global earthquake preparedness movement with more than 21 million participants expected worldwide in 2013. This year marks the 6th annual Great California ShakeOut and more than nine million Californians – from schools to businesses to organizations to neighborhoods – are expected to participate statewide.

We are proud that the drill we created in 2008 has since become the model for ShakeOut initiatives in 43 states and territories and was federally recognized with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) 2011 Individual and Community Preparedness Award for California’s broad-based coalition of earthquake stakeholder organizations, the Earthquake Country Alliance. The community support of ShakeOut nationally is highly valued, and in this anniversary year, your participation in the October 17th ShakeOut and 24th Loma Prieta Anniversary event will highlight the importance of our local partners in California’s “whole community.”

We hope you will join us October 17th to promote The Great California ShakeOut and commemorate the Loma Prieta earthquake anniversary.
