Featuring a preparedness fair and the American Red Cross volunteer “flash dance,” demonstrating Drop, Cover, and Hold On! This event will promote earthquake preparedness through the commemoration of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake anniversary, celebrate the millions of Californians who make themselves safer by practicing how to protect themselves during earthquake shaking, and invite them to register for tomorrow’s ShakeOut and to take “one more step” to help California recover more quickly from the next big earthquake.
National and local leaders will come together to commemorate Loma Prieta and encourage ShakeOut participation the following day, October 18. A “Flash Drill” will take place in Union Square as American Red Cross volunteers demonstrate Drop Cover Hold and On drill. In addition, guest speakers will discuss the importance of earthquake safety and preparedness. Attendees can register for the ShakeOut on laptops and mobile devices at the event. Our partners in preparedness will distribute educational material to travelers and families. There will be an earthquake simulator to provide attendees with a live demonstration of an earthquake.
