Summary:
The EarthScope National Office will be hosting a public lecture session on campus at Arizona State University on the evening of Wednesday, October 16 from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The lectures will cover topics such as earthquakes, plate tectonics, earthquakes in Arizona, and earthquake preparedness.

Full Description:
Members of the EarthScope National Office (ESNO) will participate in the "Great Arizona ShakeOut" on Oct. 17, 2013. The Great ShakeOut is the world's largest earthquake drill, with more than 19 million people participating world-wide. 2012 was the first year that ESNO's home state of Arizona participated in the ShakeOut drill, and Arizona had a good showing with over 62,000 people taking part in the "Drop, Cover and Hold on" drill.

In addition to the drill itself, the EarthScope National Office will be hosting a public lecture session on campus at Arizona State University on the evening of Wednesday, October 16 from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the Marston Exploration Theater, building ISTB4, ASU Tempe campus. Parking is available in the Rural Road Structure just east of ISTB4 until 10:30 PM for $3/hr or $10/day.

The lecture session will include talks from expert geologists Dr. Ramon Arrowsmith, Dr. Ed Garnero, and Dr. Steven Semken. The lectures will answer these questions and more:
What is plate tectonics?
Why do earthquakes happen?
Do earthquakes happen in Arizona?
What should I do if there is an earthquake?
The lecture series will also contain content relevant to this year’s Earth Science Week (October 13-19) topic, “Mapping Our World” (http://www.earthsciweek.org/).

The EarthScope National Office will be hosting a contest for those ages 2-17. The winners from each age category will receive free EarthScope and ShakeOut swag! Please visit www.earthscope.org/shakeout to find out more information or to enter the contest.
